Improvement works have officially begun on Grove Street in Wilmslow, marking a significant step in plans to enhance the town centre for residents, businesses and visitors.

The project, funded by Wilmslow Town Council, will see a series of upgrades carried out to improve both the appearance and functionality of one of the town’s busiest streets.

What the works include

The improvements will focus on: • Upgrades to the footway and carriageway • Essential drainage works • Repairs to surfacing around existing trees, including tree pits

The initial phase of works is expected to cost £56,000, forming part of a wider refurbishment programme with a total budget of £80,000.

Delivery of the project is being handled by Cheshire East Council, acting as the principal authority.

Timeline and disruption

Construction began on Monday, 13 April 2026 and is scheduled to take approximately 18 working days to complete.

Work will take place between 08:00 and 17:00, Monday to Friday, with phased road closures in place throughout the project to ensure the safety of workers and the public.

Residents and businesses in the area are being advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel during the construction period.

Mayor welcomes “much-needed” improvements

Wilmslow Town Mayor Councillor Sally Harrison said the project reflects feedback from the local community.

She said: “We are delighted to see work begin on these much-needed repairs and improvements to Grove Street, including a range of smaller enhancements that will make a real difference to the look and feel of the area, as well as the removal of the blue tree barriers that have been part of the street scene for some time.

We know from our latest Annual Residents’ Survey how important improving the town’s appearance – particularly Grove Street – is to residents, so we are proud to support and fund these works.

We recognise that there may be some temporary inconvenience while the works are underway, and we thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience. We are confident that the long-term benefits will make a real difference to the town centre.”

Long-term benefits for the town

The scheme is part of a broader effort to improve Wilmslow’s town centre, with a focus on creating a more attractive and accessible environment for shoppers and visitors.

While short-term disruption is expected, council officials say the upgrades will help improve the overall experience of the area and support local businesses once completed.
