Poundstretcher could plunge into administration putting 4 Cheshire stores at risk
Court told that restructuring plan needed to avoid administration

Discount retailer Poundstretcher, which operates nearly 300 stores across the UK, faces the very real prospect of administration unless creditors back a crucial restructuring plan later this month.
The Court Hearing The High Court heard on Wednesday 7 May 2026 that Poundstretcher would have “no alternative” but to file for administration if its restructuring proposal is not approved. Lawyers for the company told the court the retailer would face “insufficient funds” to meet a financial obligation of £2.8 million due in the week beginning 28 June. That sum would rise sharply to £9.7 million in the week commencing 26 July. Tom Smith KC, representing Poundstretcher, told the court that under those circumstances, “the directors of the company will likely have no choice but to file for administration”.
Mr. Justice Hildyard ruled he was “satisfied” for the case to advance to a creditor vote, scheduled for 26 May. If creditors approve the plan, the High Court will consider final approval at a “sanction hearing” set for 4 June.
What the Restructuring Plan Involves The restructuring plan, which was formally launched in late March 2026, is centred on negotiating rent reductions with landlords across Poundstretcher’s entire store portfolio. The company says the plan does not involve any store closures or job losses. Poundstretcher employs around 3,000 staff nationwide. The retailer’s barrister warned that if administration were to occur instead, immediate liquidation of the business would be likely.
Poundstretcher was acquired by US investment firm Fortress Investment Group — which also owns Majestic Wine — in 2024 for an undisclosed sum. Cheshire Stores at Risk Cheshire has four confirmed Poundstretcher locations that would be affected if administration were to proceed: • Ellesmere Port — 19–27 Mercer Walk, Ellesmere Port, CH65 0AP • Crewe — Market Centre, Crewe[poundstretcher] • Warrington — Parker Street, Warrington • Runcorn — a confirmed branch serving the town All four stores currently remain open and are trading as normal.
What Happens Next The critical date for Poundstretcher’s future is 26 May 2026, when creditors will vote on the restructuring proposal. Should creditors vote in favour, the plan returns to the High Court for a final sanction hearing on 4 June 2026. The company has insisted throughout this process that it remains committed to serving customers and has no plans to close stores or make redundancies.
