The former sprinter, who is a member of the European Space Agency astronaut reserve, may take part in a mission to the Haven-1 commercial space station after the UK Space Agency signed an agreement with US space company Vast.

Haven-1 is being developed by Vast as a small commercial space station and is currently planned for launch as early as 2027.

In 2022, he was selected for the European Space Agency’s astronaut reserve as part of a project looking at whether a person with a physical disability could safely take part in space missions.

Last year, he became the first person with a physical disability to be medically cleared for a long-duration mission in orbit.

The proposed Haven-1 mission would allow researchers to study how his body, movement and prosthetic limb respond to microgravity.

That could provide useful scientific information for spaceflight, prosthetic design, rehabilitation and medical research on Earth.

The mission could also help space agencies and commercial operators better understand how spacecraft, equipment and procedures can be designed for a wider range of people.

Supporters say the work is about more than symbolism.

The aim is to test what is practically possible and gather evidence that could make future missions more accessible.

The Guardian reported that Dr McFall has said the mission should have scientific value rather than simply be treated as a milestone.
