Katie Edwards is raising money for Macclesfield Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit after her premature twin boys spent 17 days receiving specialist care.
Cheshire mother is walking 70 miles this month to raise money for the hospital unit that cared for her premature twin boys.
Katie Edwards is taking on the challenge for Macclesfield Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit, where her sons Ronnie and Ray received specialist care after being born seven months ago.
The twins arrived at 35 weeks and one day and spent 17 days in the unit while staff supported them through the early stages of life.
The experience left the family deeply grateful for the care they received, and the fundraising challenge is intended to help other parents who may face a similar situation.
Money raised will support improvements to the family room and facilities at the unit, helping make hospital stays more comfortable for parents and relatives.
Funds will also help provide essential supplies such as nappies and wipes for premature babies and newborns who need extra care.
Katie and her partner Luke said they wanted to give something back after the support their boys received during a difficult and emotional time.
The Special Care Baby Unit at Macclesfield Hospital provides care for babies who are born early or need additional medical support after birth.
This can include help with feeding, temperature regulation, monitoring and other specialist support while babies become strong enough to go home.
For families, time in a neonatal or special care unit can be overwhelming. Parents may be recovering from birth while also spending long days at hospital, waiting for progress and learning how to care for babies who need extra help.
The 70-mile challenge is a way of recognising the role the unit played during the twins’ first weeks, while also supporting future families who rely on the service.
