Homes and businesses in parts of Knutsford and the surrounding area were affected by low or no water pressure after a fault at a United Utilities pumping station.
Homes, businesses and schools in parts of Knutsford were affected by water supply problems after a fault at a United Utilities pumping station.
Residents in the WA16 and SK11 postcode areas reported low pressure or no water following issues linked to power outages affecting local pumps.
United Utilities said it was investigating the problem on Sunday morning, with customers warned they could experience no water or poor pressure while the issue was dealt with.
The company later said the fault at the pumping station had been repaired and that taps should begin flowing again. It added that it could take up to two hours for supplies to return fully to normal.
The disruption also affected local schools.
Knutsford Academy confirmed on Monday 29 June that it had to close because of the water outage in the town. The school said the decision had been made for health and safety reasons.
Staff said any pupils arriving on site would be safely supervised until arrangements were made for them to travel home, either by collection or by train.
Water outages can cause practical problems quickly, particularly for schools, care settings, hospitality businesses and households with young children or vulnerable residents.
For schools, a reliable water supply is needed for drinking water, toilets, handwashing, catering and general site safety.
United Utilities’ update indicated the incident had been completed, but residents were advised to allow time for pressure to build back up across the network.
After a supply interruption, water can sometimes appear cloudy or discoloured as pipes refill and pressure changes move harmless sediment in the network.
Customers are usually advised to run the cold kitchen tap gently until the water clears if this happens.
Anyone still experiencing no water or poor pressure should check United Utilities’ local incident page or contact the company directly.
Residents affected by a power cut can also call 105, the free national number that connects customers to their local electricity network operator. Cheshire West and Chester Council also advises households to keep bottled water available in case a power outage disrupts supply.
The incident underlines how dependent local water systems can be on electricity-powered pumping equipment, particularly when faults or outages affect pressure across a wider area.
