Wilmslow Library has received an £800 Community Grant from Wilmslow Town Council to support free children’s events and activities during this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Wilmslow Library has been awarded an £800 Community Grant to help deliver a programme of free events and activities for children and families this summer.

The funding from Wilmslow Town Council will support activities linked to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, a national initiative that encourages school-aged children to keep reading during the school holidays.

Children taking part are challenged to read six books and visit the library at least four times over the summer.

As they progress through the challenge, they can collect rewards before receiving a medal and certificate when they complete it.

The grant will help Wilmslow Library offer additional free activities alongside the reading challenge, giving families more reasons to visit and take part during the holidays.

Planned events include an illustrator event, an animal and insect experience by ZooLab, two street dance and cheerleading sessions, and library-run craft activities throughout the summer.

The Summer Reading Challenge is designed to make reading feel fun and accessible, while also helping children stay connected with their local library outside term time.

For families, the programme offers free activities during the school holidays at a time when many household budgets remain under pressure.

Councillor Sally Harrison, Wilmslow Town Mayor, said the town council was delighted to support the library’s Summer Reading Challenge again.

She said the challenge was a fantastic way to encourage children to enjoy reading while taking part in fun, free activities over the summer.

The mayor added that the council hoped many local children would enjoy the programme and thanked the library team for organising the activities.

Libraries continue to play an important role in local communities, offering access to books, information, digital support, study space and activities for people of all ages.

For younger readers, summer schemes can also help maintain reading confidence before the return to school in September.

Residents can find out more about activities and events through the Wilmslow Library webpage or the library’s Facebook page.

Further information about the national scheme is also available through the Summer Reading Challenge website.
