Leave plenty of travel time for Chester races on Friday because of roadworks

Visitors heading to Chester Racecourse for Friday evening’s meeting are being advised to leave extra travel time because of roadworks and race-day traffic restrictions.

Visitors heading to Chester Racecourse on Friday have been urged to plan ahead and allow additional time for their journeys.

The warning comes ahead of the Ibiza Classics Evening with Ibiza in Symphony, taking place at the racecourse on Friday, 10 July.

Roadworks in and around Chester, combined with the additional traffic expected for the race meeting, could lead to delays for people travelling into the city.

Racegoers are being advised to check their route before leaving and arrive earlier than usual, particularly if travelling by car.

Chester Racecourse regularly introduces traffic restrictions around the Roodee on race days to help manage vehicles and large numbers of pedestrians.

Its published travel guidance says New Crane Street, Watergate Street and Nuns Road are normally closed with safety barriers between 9am and 9pm on race days, although timings can differ for evening fixtures.

Drivers should also be aware that city-centre car parks and roads approaching the racecourse are likely to become busier as the meeting approaches.

The racecourse recommends checking current roadworks and traffic information before travelling, as emergency or short-notice works may not always appear far in advance.

Cheshire West and Chester Council provides a live roadworks map covering current and planned closures across the borough.

Friday’s fixture combines evening racing with a live orchestral performance celebrating Ibiza dance music.

It is followed on Saturday, 11 July, by the Music Weekend Saturday meeting featuring The Bootleg Beatles, meaning Chester is expected to remain busy throughout the weekend.

People travelling by train should also allow time to walk from Chester railway station to the racecourse and check for any service disruption before setting out.

Those driving are advised to follow temporary signs and directions from racecourse staff on arrival.
