UK heatwave to intensify again as it enters second week

After a brief drop in temperature many areas will see heat and humidity build again this week

The UK heatwave will intensify again as it enters its second week, with many areas seeing heat and humidity build after a brief temperature drop. More places in England and Wales are expected to exceed 30C, with some forecasts suggesting temperatures close to the mid-30s could be reached in a few locations.

Although temperatures will dip slightly into the weekend, heatwave conditions will continue across much of England and Wales, with amber and yellow heat health warnings remaining in place until 21:00 BST on Sunday. North-easterly winds will bring cooler conditions to North Sea coasts, where highs on Sunday and Monday may reach 18-21C, but the western half of England and Wales will remain hot with highs of 26-30C widely.

Parts of south-east Wales and south-west England could see temperatures rise to 31-33C. The heat is set to build again widely next week, and while it may not be as hot as the past seven days, heatwave criteria could be met in more of the UK by Wednesday or Thursday.

Current forecasts suggest there is a chance that somewhere in the UK will reach 30C or more for 12 consecutive days, though this could end by next weekend. The dry spell is expected to continue for most places, with only brief showers possible in the far south-west of England on Monday before dying out further north on Tuesday.

Rain chances are not expected to increase significantly until the end of the week, likely confined to southern England.
