Britain’s world-class medical research is failing to deliver better health outcomes for enough people due to unrealised potential, according to a new report. The report highlights that despite the UK leading globally in medical discovery, this success is not translating into tangible health benefits for the wider population.

It identifies a gap between high-quality research and the adoption of new treatments and diagnostics in everyday healthcare settings. Experts are calling for a coordinated national strategy to bridge this divide, including faster adoption of innovations within the NHS and improved systems for matching patients to clinical trials.

The findings suggest that without structural changes to how research is implemented, the country will continue to underutilise its scientific capabilities. Alzheimer’s Research UK has specifically urged ministers to establish a dementia drugs fund to pay for breakthrough treatments while generating evidence for wider NHS rollout, reflecting the broader need to accelerate access to new medicines.
