The UK is experiencing a hot, dry and exceptionally sunny heatwave with persistent temperatures reaching 30C, as some locations record double the usual sunshine hours for this point in the month. Darren Bett of the BBC Weather team explained that the current conditions are delivering exceptional sunshine across the country.
Southern England, including London and the Southeast, remains in the grip of the heatwave with temperatures climbing into the low 30s°C. Peak readings are anticipated to hit 33C to 34C in southeastern and central southern England, with some spots potentially reaching 35C.
Northern England is seeing cooler conditions with isolated showers, while Scotland experiences milder weather with patchy cloud and rain. The UK Health Security Agency has issued amber heat health alerts covering large parts of England, including the Midlands and southern regions.
People are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure during the hottest part of the day between 11am and 3pm, and check on vulnerable friends and neighbours. The heatwave is expected to continue for an extended period, with heat health alerts remaining in force for nearly all of England until at least Sunday.
