Holmes Chapel railway station in Cheshire has been temporarily renamed "It's Coming Holmes Chapel" in anticipation of England's World Cup semi-final match against Argentina tonight. The name change is part of Northern's initiative to promote a positive atmosphere and encourage fans to use public transport for their journeys to pubs and fan zones, as well as for returning home after the game.
Alex Hornby, Commercial and Customer Director for Northern, stated, "With England taking on Argentina in the semi-final, we wanted to give our customers something to smile about on the way to wherever they're watching the game. On a more serious note, we're encouraging as many fans as possible to leave the car at home and travel by train, whether that's heading into town for the atmosphere or just getting home safely after full time."
Northern has confirmed that trains will be running late into the evening to accommodate fans returning home after the match. However, they advise supporters to check their last train times, especially if the match goes to extra time or penalties. The station's name will revert back to Holmes Chapel once the outcome of the match is determined.
