A new independent arts and crafts business has opened in Knutsford Market Hall, restoring access to art and craft supplies following the closure of the town’s long-established Knutsford Art Shop and Stationery House.
The original family-run shop, which had served customers in Knutsford for around 40 years, closed in January 2025 after its owners cited rising costs and increasing pressures on the business.
Now, Cheshire Craft Store, owned by Melanie and Simon Naylor, has opened inside the market hall, offering a wide selection of arts and crafts materials to local artists, hobbyists and families.
The couple already run Cheshire Party Store in the market, selling balloons, greeting cards and party supplies. Their latest venture expands their presence by providing products ranging from wool, knitting needles and sewing thread to paints, sketchbooks and art materials for beginners and experienced artists alike.
Melanie Naylor said the new business was created in response to local demand after the closure of the former art shop.
“We’re delighted to open Cheshire Craft Store and bring these products back to Knutsford,” she said. “We’re stocking all your favourites, from wool, needles and thread to paints, sketchbooks and art materials for both experienced and budding artists.”
The store aims to fill the gap left by the closure of Knutsford Art Shop and Stationery House, ensuring residents no longer need to travel outside the town for specialist arts and crafts supplies.
The opening comes as Knutsford Market Hall continues to support independent businesses and encourage more people to shop locally. The market has introduced new initiatives, including a monthly prize of £20 in Knutsford Vouchers for a regular customer and a loyalty scheme launched by independent trader York & Co – The Grocer.
Sandra Curties, town centre manager for Knutsford Town Council, welcomed the arrival of the new business.
“Melanie’s new business fills a real gap in the town, giving artists, crafters and hobbyists access to quality supplies once again,” she said.
Knutsford Market Hall is home to a range of independent traders and is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and during every Knutsford Makers Market Sunday. The new addition strengthens the market’s growing mix of local businesses while bringing a valued service back to the town centre.
