AI operations tools will create console sprawl and cause IT systems to break more frequently, according to Gartner, a leading technology research and advisory firm. The firm warns that while automation is expanding, by 2030 a quarter of current IT operations work will be handled by unsupervised automated systems, which Gartner describes as “unsupervised clankers” .
These unsupervised agents are expected to operate without human oversight, increasing the risk of errors and system failures if not properly governed. Gartner’s April 2026 Hype Cycle for Agentic AI places AI agent development platforms at the Peak of Inflated Expectations, indicating high potential but emerging maturity and a 2–5 year timeline before mainstream adoption .
The advisory firm recommends that organisations prioritise agentic AI use cases based on business value and technical viability, while partnering with business stakeholders to identify opportunities where AI can materially improve outcomes . It also advises selecting AI agent development platforms that address critical needs including security, observability, governance, monitoring and scalability .
Market penetration for AI agent development platforms is already above 50% of the target audience, though the technology remains in the emerging stage of maturity .
