Andy Burnham was due to welcome Volodymyr Zelenskyy as his first foreign visitor as prime minister, in a meeting at a naval base in England. The visit was described as a show of Britain’s support for Ukraine.
According to the report, Burnham and the Ukrainian president were expected to hear how UK-led training programmes are helping strengthen Ukraine’s armed forces. They were also due to meet more than 200 Ukrainian military personnel and sailors who had spent the past three weeks in Britain taking part in Exercise Sea Breeze, a maritime security and counter-mine exercise.
Burnham said in a statement that “Britain stands with Ukraine, shoulder to shoulder, and our support remains unwavering.” He added that Russia should be in no doubt about Britain’s resolve and that the country would not back down until there was a “long-lasting and just peace for Ukraine.”
