Huge blow as Jodrell Bank funding withdrawn putting its future at risk
The current agreement ends in March 2028

Jodrell Bank Observatory is facing an uncertain future after UK Research and Innovation withdrew funding for e-MERLIN, the network of radio telescopes based there. The current funding agreement runs until March 2028, and the Lovell Telescope could stop operating if no alternative support is found.
According to the reports, UKRI said e-MERLIN would not be prioritised for further funding after the existing agreement ends. The University of Manchester said the decision was announced on Monday, 27 July, and confirmed that the current funding will end in March 2028.
The Sky report said the Lovell Telescope has stood at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire since 1957. It also said the Jodrell Bank Centre for Engagement is regarded as a separate entity and is not thought to be at risk from the cut.
UKRI said it had carried out a prioritisation process to focus investment on areas offering the greatest long-term scientific capability, impact and value for the UK. It added that the current e-MERLIN agreement provides time to explore alternative funding arrangements.
