Organic Eggs Found to Have Greater Climate Impact Than Caged Chicken Eggs

A study indicates that transitioning the UK’s egg production to an organic free-range model could result in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 2,316,000 tonnes of CO2.

Research reported by The Guardian suggests that organic eggs have a greater climate impact than those from caged chickens, with organic production being twice as detrimental to the environment.

The study estimates that if the UK were to switch entirely to an organic free-range egg production model, it would generate greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 2,316,000 tonnes of CO2. In contrast, a fully caged system would produce approximately 1,184,000 tonnes of CO2.

The researchers attribute this higher environmental impact to the need for more chickens in organic free-range systems to produce the same quantity of eggs, making them less efficient than caged systems. Additionally, organic free-range production was found to score poorly in terms of water eutrophication, acidification, and land use.

Current UK egg production, which includes a mix of caged, barn-housed, free-range non-organic, and free-range organic systems, is estimated to emit around 1,439,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

Dr Harriet Bartlett, a senior research associate at Oxford University’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment and one of the study's authors, noted that while organic and free-range systems are often viewed as better for animal welfare, they can lead to higher environmental impacts due to their inefficiency in egg production.

The study, published in Royal Society Open Science, involved an analysis of data from UK poultry farms to assess environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions and land use, as well as welfare indicators like chicken mortality rates.

Lee Holdstock, head of regulatory and trade affairs at Soil Association Certification, commented on the research, stating that it highlights important trade-offs but presents an incomplete picture of environmental impact. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to sustainability that considers various factors, including nature, soil health, and animal welfare.

The study did not mention any specific Cheshire businesses or local incidents related to the findings.
