Vines of Cheshire: A Dream Vineyard on the Outskirts of Chester
Vines of Cheshire represents the culmination of a long-held dream for wine enthusiasts Simon and Mandy Pryce, located near Backford.

Vines of Cheshire, a new vineyard located on the outskirts of Chester, is the realisation of a dream for wine enthusiasts Simon and Mandy Pryce. Situated on a south and south-west facing hillside in Backford, the vineyard is strategically placed to maximise sunlight exposure.
The journey to establish the vineyard began years ago when the Pryces, inspired by their travels through renowned wine regions in Australia, Italy, France, and the UK, developed a passion for viticulture. They were particularly impressed by the quality of British wines, which motivated them to create their own vineyard in Cheshire.
Finding the right location proved challenging due to Cheshire's heavy glacial clay soils, which are often unsuitable for vine cultivation. After a lengthy search, the couple secured a site with steep slopes that provide excellent drainage and sunlight, essential for producing high-quality grapes.
In May and June 2023, Simon and Mandy, alongside their family, hand-planted 3,400 vines, dedicating evenings and weekends to the task. An additional 2,600 vines were planted using machinery in a section of the vineyard where the slope was less steep.
Sustainability is a core principle of Vines of Cheshire, which aims to produce exclusive still and sparkling wines that reflect the unique character of the Cheshire countryside. The vineyard has already received recognition, with its 2025 Rosé winning an award at the WineGB Awards.
The Pryces have also hosted open days that have garnered positive community engagement, featuring live music and local artisan producers. Plans are underway to collaborate with select delicatessens and independent wine merchants to expand the reach of their wines throughout the county.
Vines of Cheshire is located approximately three miles from Chester city centre and one mile from Chester Zoo. Tours and wine tastings at the vineyard require advance booking, and visitors can find local transport options available via the Backford Church bus stop.
