Cheshire Garden Centre Celebrates 200 Years of Family Horticultural Heritage
Seven generations of the Yates family have helped shape one of Cheshire's longest-established horticultural businesses since it was founded in 1826.

A Cheshire garden centre that traces its roots back to 1826 is celebrating 200 years of family involvement in horticulture, making it one of the county's longest-established independent businesses.
Plumleys Garden Centre, based in the village of Plumley near Knutsford, remains under the ownership of the Yates family, with the sixth and seventh generations now helping to run the business.
The family's story began in Manchester when George Yates established a seed business in 1826. For more than a century the company built a reputation within the horticultural industry before relocating its operations to rural Cheshire in 1935, where it continues to trade today.
The move proved significant during the Second World War after the original Manchester premises were destroyed during the Blitz in 1941. From its Cheshire base, the family continued supplying seeds while also growing vegetables to support Britain's wartime food production efforts.
As the business expanded, it became well known throughout the North West for supplying specialist grass seed mixtures to sports clubs, including Manchester United, alongside its traditional horticultural expertise.
For many years the site was known locally as the Hidden Nursery because of its tucked-away countryside location. In 2017, the business was officially rebranded as Plumleys, reflecting the name customers had already adopted and strengthening its identity as a destination garden centre.
Today the centre combines its horticultural roots with a wider retail offering, including a café serving homemade food, a gift shop and an extensive range of plants sourced from both local growers and specialist suppliers. The business has also continued to invest in new departments and seasonal displays as it adapts to changing customer demand while remaining independently owned. Andrew Yates said reaching the 200-year milestone was a source of great pride for the family, while his son Sam said the aim was to build on the business's long history by embracing new ideas and ensuring it continues to thrive for future generations.
Despite the changes seen over two centuries, the Yates family says its commitment to horticulture, customer service and independent retailing remains at the heart of the business as it celebrates a landmark anniversary.
