Apple has launched a new legal challenge against a UK Government demand requiring the company to provide access to encrypted customer data, extending a long-running dispute over digital privacy and national security.
The case was filed with the Investigatory Powers Tribunal in July and challenges a technical capability notice issued by the Home Office under the Investigatory Powers Act. A hearing is expected to take place in September.
The notice forms part of the Government's legal powers requiring technology companies to assist law enforcement and security agencies in certain circumstances. Apple is seeking to overturn the requirement, arguing that weakening encryption could undermine the security and privacy of its customers.
The latest action follows an earlier dispute between the company and UK authorities over similar requests. Reports indicate that a previous demand was later withdrawn before a revised notice was issued that no longer applied to users based in the United States.
Apple has consistently argued that it should not create mechanisms capable of bypassing its own encryption, maintaining that any such capability could increase security risks if exploited by criminals or hostile actors.
The case has attracted wider interest from privacy and civil liberties organisations, including Privacy International and Liberty, which have been involved in related proceedings concerning the balance between individual privacy rights and the Government's surveillance powers.
The legal challenge comes as governments around the world continue to debate how encrypted communications should be regulated, with technology companies arguing that strong encryption is essential to protect users from cybercrime, fraud and unauthorised access to personal data.
The Investigatory Powers Tribunal is expected to consider the case when proceedings begin later this year.
