Nantwich Junction Works Cause Major Delays as Traffic Signal Upgrade Begins

Motorists faced lengthy delays in Nantwich after improvement works began at one of the town centre's busiest road junctions, with temporary traffic lights causing congestion on the first day of the project.
The work started on 4 August at the junction of Waterlode, Welsh Row and High Street, where Cheshire East Council is replacing ageing traffic signal equipment and installing a new controller designed to improve the reliability of the junction.
Temporary traffic management was introduced to allow engineers to carry out the work safely, but drivers reported queues building in all directions throughout the day as vehicles moved slowly through the temporary signals.
The council expects the project to continue until 21 August, meaning motorists are likely to experience disruption for more than two weeks while the upgrade is completed.
Several drivers expressed frustration at the delays, with some describing traffic conditions as chaotic and saying the roadworks had made journeys through the town centre significantly longer. Others pointed to additional highway works near Reaseheath, saying the combination had added to congestion across the area.
The junction is one of the main routes through Nantwich, carrying traffic between the town centre, residential areas and surrounding villages. Any restrictions at the site can have a noticeable impact on traffic, particularly during peak travel periods.
According to Cheshire East Council, the work involves replacing traffic signal infrastructure that was last upgraded in 2016. That earlier scheme was funded through Section 106 developer contributions linked to the Malbank Waters housing development off Marsh Lane.
The latest investment is intended to improve the long-term reliability of the junction's traffic management system and reduce the risk of equipment failures in the future.
Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys while the work continues, with normal traffic conditions expected to return once the project is completed later this month.
