Electric Vehicle Registrations in Chester Rise More Than 1,000% Since 2022
The figures point to a rapid shift towards lower-emission vehicles as charging infrastructure and electric car ownership continue to expand across the area.

Electric vehicle registrations in Chester increased sharply between 2022 and 2025, according to new analysis of vehicle registration data.
The figures show the number of registered electric vehicles rising from 1,097 in 2022 to 14,228 in 2025, an increase of around 1,197%.
Hybrid registrations also grew substantially during the same period, rising from 2,337 to 12,758, an increase of approximately 446%.
Taken together, registrations of electric and hybrid vehicles increased by around 686%, reflecting the wider shift towards lower-emission motoring across the UK.
The data was analysed by car insurer eSure using Freedom of Information figures covering electric and hybrid vehicle registrations.
While the increase in Chester is significant, claims that the city recorded the highest growth in the UK have not been independently verified and should be treated cautiously.
The figures come as more motorists consider switching away from conventional petrol and diesel vehicles and manufacturers continue to expand their electric and hybrid ranges.
Government policy is also encouraging the transition, with restrictions on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles forming part of the UK's longer-term transport strategy.
Locally, the growth in electric vehicle ownership is placing greater emphasis on charging infrastructure. Cheshire West and Chester Council has already published an Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy setting out how public charging provision could develop across the borough.
The rapid rise in registrations suggests charging availability, parking provision and access for residents without off-street parking are likely to become increasingly important as more drivers move to electric vehicles.
For motorists, the transition also brings practical considerations including home charging, public charging costs, battery range, servicing and insurance.
Although electric vehicles still represent only part of the overall vehicle fleet, the latest figures indicate that adoption in Chester has accelerated significantly over the past three years.
