Plans have been submitted to convert a former office building at Adlington Park into a special school for children aged three to 14.
Revive Education Group Ltd is seeking prior approval to change the use of Unit 18 at the business and industrial estate in Adlington.
The two-storey building was previously used as offices and has private parking at the front and an enclosed yard to the rear.
Under the proposals, it would become a school for pupils who are unable to attend mainstream education for a range of reasons.
Planning documents say this could include children experiencing behavioural difficulties.
The proposed school would contain eight classrooms and operate from Monday to Friday during school term time.
According to the submission, pupils attending the school would remain enrolled within the state education system.
The proposed catchment would extend to children living within approximately a 45-minute journey of the site.
Pupils would be transported to and from the school by taxi or minibus accompanied by a chaperone, according to the planning documents.
The applicant proposes leasing the building rather than purchasing it.
No alterations to its external appearance are planned, with only limited changes expected inside to accommodate the new educational use.
The proposals have also prompted consideration of the potential effect of school-related journeys on surrounding roads.
Poynton Town Council has raised no objection in principle to the change of use but has expressed concern about the potential impact of additional traffic travelling through Poynton.
The application is being considered through the prior approval process rather than as a conventional full planning application.
It is registered with Cheshire East Council under reference 26/2626/PRIOR-3T.
The application remains at the planning stage and no final decision has yet been made.
