Cheshire West and Chester Council has said one-way traffic restrictions on Winsford Station Bridge must remain in place while further investigations continue. The council said the bridge cannot safely return to unrestricted two-way traffic at this stage.
Engineers have completed initial site investigations and are carrying out detailed assessments of the structure. The current arrangement leaves one lane open and keeps the other closed, with traffic continuing in an eastbound direction towards Middlewich.
Deputy Leader Karen Shore said the restrictions are inconvenient for residents, commuters and businesses, but that public safety must come first. She said the engineering advice is clear that it would not be safe to restore two-way traffic yet.
The council said the bridge is not at immediate risk, but further assessments are needed before any change can be made. It is also seeking funding for the repairs needed to restore full use of the bridge, and has submitted an application to the Department for Transport’s Structures Fund.
