James Cleverly has resigned from the Conservative shadow cabinet to pursue a candidacy for Mayor of London. The former home and foreign secretary, who currently serves as shadow minister for housing, communities and local government, announced his decision to resign with immediate effect in an interview with the Sunday Times.
Cleverly, the MP for Braintree, previously lost a leadership bid to Kemi Badenoch and is regarded as a moderate within a party that has shifted to the right. He expressed his belief that success in London is crucial for the Conservative party's future, stating, "I am putting myself forward to be the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London."
His resignation comes ahead of the Conservative party conference scheduled for October, where he is expected to present his case to party members. Sources close to Badenoch indicated she was disappointed by Cleverly's departure but appreciated his willingness to seek the Conservative nomination.
Cleverly praised Badenoch's recent performance, noting her growing influence within the party. He remarked, "Frankly, Kemi is doing really well now. She’s getting great cut-through."
The next London mayoral election is set for May 2028. Current Mayor Sadiq Khan, who is in the midst of his third term, has not confirmed whether he will seek a fourth term. If he does not run, Labour MP Dawn Butler is anticipated to enter the race.
Cleverly is the most prominent Conservative figure to announce a run for mayor in recent times. He has been critical of Khan, accusing him of neglecting his responsibilities and using the mayoralty as a stepping stone for higher office.
