Ambitious 'Greater Crewe' city plans could include new rail station near hospital

Cheshire East Council is looking for a strategic partner to help draw up a master plan for its Greater Crewe vision, which the council says could help turn Crewe into a city.
The council has said the work will bring together plans for transport, healthcare, housing and economic development in one overall approach. A report linked to the plans says the Greater Crewe area could include the relationship between Crewe station and station-area investment, future Birmingham-Manchester rail connectivity, the A500 corridor, Leighton Hospital redevelopment, housing growth, employment and innovation sites, town centre regeneration and private-sector investment.
The council has also said further work is being carried out to explore transport connectivity in north-west Crewe, including options around the Leighton area. A separate council update said a small study had found a new railway station in the Leighton area to be a viable option, although any decision would still need further assessment, a business case, funding and consultation.
The plans sit alongside the council’s wider ambition to use Greater Crewe as a major growth opportunity for Cheshire East.
