Nvidia goes green to keep grid capacity from zapping its revenues

Nvidia has unveiled a new approach aimed at helping data centre customers use grid capacity more efficiently while keeping its own hardware sales moving. The Register says the company showed off its DSX platform at the AI Infra Summit this week, with a focus on making AI facilities smarter, more efficient and less disruptive to local power networks.
The report says Nvidia’s DSX Flex system was demonstrated working with Emerald AI and Silicon Valley Power. In the example described, the platform could free up datacentre power when grid demand rises, while critical workloads continue running.
The article says the idea is not only to reduce the risk of brownouts, but also to make utilities more willing to approve extra capacity by allowing some of it to be reclaimed at short notice. It quotes Nvidia’s Harris as saying grid providers and transmission line owners may be less conservative if they know capacity can be curtailed within a certain window.
The Register also says non-essential workloads could be paused or moved to neighbouring datacentres with spare capacity. It concludes that Nvidia’s DSX is another walled garden that keeps customers buying its equipment.
