UK to fight Russian disinformation and push new global AI standards, Burnham says

Andy Burnham has said the UK will set up a new National Centre for Information Defence to tackle disinformation and push for global standards on artificial intelligence. He made the comments in his first major speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday evening.
Burnham said the centre would detect, attribute and disrupt information attacks, including those linked to hostile states. He also said the UK would work towards a single set of global principles and standards for AI, covering transparency, access to models and safe development.
He told world leaders that Russian agencies had used bots, fake websites and falsified newspaper articles, and had forged the branding of 28 British organisations, including universities and the BBC. The UK would also use its experience to help other countries protect against interference, the report said.
The BBC report said Burnham wants the UK to act as an “honest broker” on AI and other global challenges. It also said AI will be a central theme of Britain’s presidency of the G20 next year.
