Protein powder prices are rising as wholesale costs for whey and other dairy proteins have climbed sharply. The BBC reports that one shopper said a 4.5kg bag of whey protein which cost about £60 in 2020 had risen to £170, while another said a monthly spend had gone up from around £45 to £60.
The BBC also says some businesses have been forced to raise shelf prices. One supplier told the broadcaster its whey protein powder had gone from £12.50 last year to £17.99, and said it was still subsidising the product from other parts of the business.
The report says the increase is linked to higher wholesale prices for key ingredients, with some dairy proteins becoming much more expensive over the past year. It adds that wholesale prices have begun to level off in recent months, although they remain well above previous levels.
