The foreign secretary, Ed Miliband, is expected to tell the Labour party conference that Britain must play its part in “rebuilding” the world order and that democratic norms are under threat. He is also due to say that the international rule of law is being “brazenly flouted”.
In the same conference speech, Miliband is expected to acknowledge that Labour’s previous approach to Palestine “had not been enough”. He is set to say the government will take a more explicitly progressive foreign policy line under Andy Burnham and work with like-minded countries in a new age of diplomacy.
The Guardian report also says Miliband will frame sanctions on Israeli settlements as a response to calls from campaigners and party members. He is expected to describe the move as a shift in Labour’s approach to the Middle East.
The live politics report also carried comments from SDLP leader Claire Hanna on the Drumcree dispute in Northern Ireland. She called for an international mediator to help resolve the continuing crisis over a unionist parade in a nationalist area close to Drumcree, saying everyone needs to want mediation and compromise.
She said she was looking for “that little chink on both sides” that could lead to a compromise allowing everyone to “walk away with their head held high and their sense of honour”.
