A lorry driver who was watching TikTok on his phone ploughed into the back of a couple’s car on the M6 in Cheshire, leaving them with serious injuries.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that Kevin Prescott had collected his wife Deborah from Manchester Airport in the early hours of April 1 last year, before the pair set off home to Lancashire in their Jaguar XE saloon car.
The crash happened on the northbound M6 between junction 22 at Winwick, Warrington, and junction 23 at Haydock, shortly before 2am. The motorway was subject to a 40mph limit at the time.
Jack Haddow was driving a Mercedes Artos HGV with an attached but unloaded container from a warehouse in Nuneaton to another in Preston when he collided with the Jaguar from behind at about 50mph.
The impact forced the car across the carriageway and into the central reservation.
In court, Haddow said he had been “listening to TikTok live performance of a singer” and claimed he had never touched his phone, saying it had been left at the bottom of his rucksack.
But analysis of his iPhone later found the TikTok app had been active for up to eight minutes immediately before the collision.
Haddow, of Wood Close in Kirkham, Lancashire, admitted two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was sentenced to 28 months in prison and banned from driving for two years and nine months, with an extended retest required before he can drive again.
