The Watergates in Watergate Street, Chester, has reopened following a six-figure transformation.

The venue is housed in a building dating back to around 1180, within what is thought to be one of England’s oldest medieval crypts. Its historic features include stone-vaulted ceilings and Gothic arches.

The refurbishment has retained those features while adding updated facilities and décor. Work included refreshed exterior decoration, new lighting and signage, and improvements to the roof terrace.

Inside, the bar and dining areas have been given new furnishings, flooring, lighting and décor designed to complement the building’s heritage.

Andria Pomeroy, general manager of The Watergates, said the building had “such history and so many stories to tell”.

“We are excited about its next chapter,” she said. “Regulars and tourists love the unique feel and we can offer some amazing 21st century hospitality in this 12th century building.”

Pomeroy said the venue was intended for friends and families, diners and people looking for a stop during a day spent touring Chester, shopping or working.

The Watergates has now officially reopened following the investment.
