TG Jones has confirmed that its shop at 39-41 High Street, Congleton, will close early next year.

The former WH Smith branch is currently scheduled to trade until 9 January 2027, with a closing-down sale taking place before the final day.

The closure comes just over a year after the store was rebranded as TG Jones. The retailer said the decision followed its court-approved restructuring plan, which was approved by the High Court on 1 July.

A TG Jones spokesperson said the company was working to secure its long-term future and recognised that the closure would disappoint colleagues, customers and the local community.

The spokesperson added that the business’s immediate focus was supporting those affected and continuing to serve customers during the closure period.

Congleton Post Office, which operates from inside the TG Jones shop, will also close as a result. The Post Office said the closure date was still being finalised but was expected to be in early 2027.

Work has begun to find a replacement branch in Congleton town centre. The vacancy has been advertised and the Post Office said it had received expressions of interest from retailers.

A Post Office spokesperson said opening a replacement branch could take around six months. In the meantime, customers will be directed to the High Town and West Heath branches.
