ASOS is investigating unauthorised activity involving platforms used to communicate with customers after users received a push notification claiming the retailer’s data had been compromised.

The notification, sent through the ASOS app on Tuesday, 6 October, was reported to have told the company’s data protection officer and IT team that its Snowflake data environment had been “fully compromised” and threatened to release information.

ASOS said basic personal details, including customers’ names and contact information, may have been accessed by an unidentified third party. The retailer said it did not believe payment-card information or account passwords had been affected.

The company said it had taken immediate action to restrict access to the notification platforms. It is working with internal and external specialist advisers and relevant authorities while the investigation continues.

ASOS’s website and app were reported to be operating normally. Shares in the online fashion retailer fell by more than 11% after reports of the incident emerged.
