Home Bargains wants to relocate its Trident Retail Park store to the neighbouring former Cineworld complex in Runcorn.

A change-of-use application has been submitted to Halton Council for the vacant building. The proposal would involve refurbishing the former cinema, carrying out partial demolition work and making changes to the car park and service areas.

Home Bargains said it needs more space to provide its full retail offer. The existing store measures 1,115 square metres, while the company said its stores now need to be at least 2,323 square metres.

If approved, the move could create up to 100 jobs, including full-time and part-time positions. The application said most of the opportunities would be available to local people.

Additional work would also be created during the store fit-out and merchandising, as well as through future maintenance, cleaning and security roles.

Cineworld closed the site permanently in 2023 after operating there for more than 20 years.

The application faces an additional planning consideration because the building is designated as a community attraction and for community use. Supporting documents say the former cinema has been marketed to new cinema operators since 2020, but no interest was received.

Halton Council will decide the application.
