Home Bargains plans move into vacant Runcorn Cineworld site creating 100 jobs
A vacant cinema in Runcorn could be given a new lease of life and create up to 100 local jobs if plans are given the green light.

Home Bargains has submitted plans to move its existing store at Trident Retail Park into the neighbouring former Cineworld complex in Runcorn.
The proposed relocation and expansion could create up to 100 jobs, with full-time and part-time roles expected to be available to local people.
A change of use application has been submitted to Halton Council on behalf of the retailer. The plans include refurbishing the vacant cinema building, partial demolition work and changes to the car park and service areas.
Home Bargains said its current store measures 1,115 square metres. The company’s application said stores now need to be at least 2,323 square metres to provide its “full retail offer”.
The application said the move would strengthen the retail offer in Halton Lea and improve choice for shoppers. It also identified additional employment linked to fitting out and merchandising the store, as well as maintenance, cleaning and security work.
The former Cineworld closed permanently in 2023 after more than 20 years at the site.
The proposal faces an additional planning consideration because the building is designated as a community attraction and for community use. The application must address whether the site remains suitable or viable for that purpose.
A supporting document said the building had been marketed to new cinema operators since 2020, but no interest had been received.
Halton Council will decide the application.
