A Macclesfield councillor is calling for Cheshire East Council to examine whether lower speed limits could improve road safety across the borough.
Green Party councillor John Knight is due to raise a “20s Plenty” motion at the council meeting on Wednesday, 14 October. The proposal asks the highways department to assess the potential benefits and cost of introducing lower urban speed limits.
The motion follows the deaths of 59 people on Cheshire East roads over the past five years. A 21-year-old woman died following a collision on Friday, 9 October, while a 68-year-old pedestrian was killed in Macclesfield in September.
The proposal points to evidence from Wales and local authorities in Scotland and England, where default urban speed limits have been reduced. It says collisions and casualties have fallen in some areas, alongside other potential benefits including lower insurance costs.
Councillor Knight stressed that the motion does not seek the immediate introduction of 20mph limits in urban areas. Instead, it asks council officers to investigate how similar benefits could be achieved in Cheshire East and prepare a costed plan.
He said there were already campaigns in his Macclesfield Central ward calling for slower speeds on Ryles Park Road, as well as requests relating to Park Lane and Bond Street, including outside Parkroyal Community School.
The motion asks the highways department to set out the likely costs of implementation and the potential financial benefits over time. The council will consider the request at its meeting on 14 October.
