A monthly sustainability meet-up in Chester has moved to The Pied Bull on Northgate Street, with its next gathering scheduled for Thursday 15 October.

People Planet Pint, an informal event bringing together people interested in environmental issues, will now meet at the historic city centre pub following its recent refurbishment.

The gatherings provide an opportunity for residents, local businesses and community organisations to exchange ideas about sustainability without formal presentations or panel discussions.

The Chester group is hosted by Helen Tandy, founder of local not-for-profit organisation Eco Communities, which supports environmental projects across Cheshire West.

The move to The Pied Bull follows refurbishment work at the venue intended to reduce its environmental impact.

Located at 57 Northgate Street, the pub is one of Chester’s oldest coaching inns, with a history traditionally traced to 1155. It operates as a pub, restaurant and hotel, with its own microbrewery and beer garden.

The next People Planet Pint event begins at 7pm on Thursday 15 October. Those attending can also stay for the pub’s regular quiz at 9pm.

The Chester meet-up launched in March 2023 as part of the wider People Planet Pint network, which began during the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in 2021.

The initiative has since expanded internationally, organising regular informal gatherings where people can discuss environmental concerns, share experiences and explore practical solutions.

Locally, Eco Communities has been developing projects encouraging people to repair, reuse and share everyday items rather than replace them.

Tandy said there was growing interest across Cheshire in returning to habits that reduce waste and make better use of existing resources.

“Previous generations repaired and repurposed. We want to bring that mindset back to Cheshire West,” she said.

“Some of these projects already exist locally, while others are still dreams, but we can only move forward with community support.”

The organisation secured crowdfunding support in May to help develop its circular economy projects in the area.

Funding included contributions from Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Climate Change Emergency Fund and Community Innovation Fund, alongside other backers.

The work includes initiatives intended to make reusing products and reducing packaging waste more accessible to local households.

Eco Communities is also inviting residents to help choose locations for additional refill hubs through its website.

People Planet Pint takes place on the third Thursday of each month, with the Chester gatherings open to anyone interested in sustainability, regardless of their professional background or previous involvement in environmental projects.

Further information about the meetings is available through the People Planet Pint website.
