The landlady of the Church House Inn in Sutton, near Macclesfield, has defended the pub’s use of AI-generated images to promote food and special offers.

Kristen said the pub was responding to criticism after using artificial intelligence in some advertising. In a social media post, she insisted the business was “not trying to hide that” or deceive customers.

She explained that the Church House Inn is a small, independent country pub without the marketing staff, social media manager or professional photographer available to larger chains.

Kristen said the pub usually uses photographs of its own food, but that AI may be used when turning an image into a poster containing wording or a promotional message.

She added that the pub would not advertise food it could not serve, saying it would not deliberately mislead customers.

The landlady said the team’s priority remained the food produced in the kitchen, the quality of the ingredients and the work of the chefs.

She also compared the criticism faced by smaller businesses with the advertising budgets of major chains, questioning whether customers held large companies to the same standard when promotional images did not match the food served.

The Church House Inn said it makes “no apology” for using technology to help promote the business.
