Prime Minister Andy Burnham is due to welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Downing Street, promising “rock-solid” support for Ukraine amid tensions over a US deal to buy diesel from Russia.
The meeting is expected to take place on Wednesday, with Mr Burnham set to announce an acceleration of military support for Ukraine and further sanctions aimed at Moscow.
The visit follows Donald Trump’s decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel exports. The agreement would allow Russia to supply diesel to the United States and global markets, beginning with an initial 300,000 tonnes, followed by a further 500,000 tonnes in November.
Mr Zelenskyy criticised the deal as a benefit to Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that increased energy revenues could help fund Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described the situation between Washington and its allies as involving “very difficult few days”. The UK Government has said it will maintain pressure on Russia and strengthen sanctions intended to constrain its war machine.
Mr Burnham spoke to Mr Zelenskyy by telephone on Saturday and expressed his “complete solidarity” with Ukraine. The two leaders also discussed the need for continued pressure on Russia and an immediate energy ceasefire.
The meeting in Downing Street will be Mr Zelenskyy’s first visit to a European capital since the US announced the diesel agreement, according to reports.
European leaders are expected to discuss stronger sanctions against Moscow at a European Council summit on Thursday.
