Local charities and community groups in Congleton are being encouraged to apply for a share of around £15,000 in annual grant funding from Congleton Town Council.

The grants support projects and activities that benefit people living in Congleton. Applications received by Monday, October 26, will be considered by the council’s Finance and Policy Committee at its meeting on Thursday, November 5.

Congleton Chess Club is among the local groups to have received support. The club has recently marked its first birthday and is preparing to launch a new under-16 section.

Founder Maurice Scholes said the club had settled into its new home at Orso Lounge, received more than £500 from Congleton Town Council and the English Chess Federation, played its first friendly match and joined a new league.

The club has also continued supporting chess activities at a local primary school, Mr Scholes said.

Congleton Town Mayor Councillor Suzy Firkin said community groups and charities helped make Congleton a good place to live.

She encouraged eligible organisations with projects or ideas benefiting the community to find out more and apply for support.

Applications are open to Congleton-based charities, community and voluntary groups, not-for-profit community businesses and individuals seeking help with projects or events that benefit the wider community.

Organisations based outside Congleton can also apply if their project benefits Congleton residents.

Applicants must complete a Financial Assistance Application Form. Further details, including the form and online application route, are available through Congleton Town Council’s grants service.
