A 50-minute immersive David Attenborough experience is set to open at Chester Zoo on Saturday, October 17.

Our Story with David Attenborough will be shown in a purpose-built screening room created inside a repurposed orangutan and ape house near the zoo’s Islands habitat.

The Chester attraction is the first venue outside London to host the experience. It was previously shown at the Natural History Museum, where more than 245,000 people watched it, according to Chester Zoo chief operating officer Dominic Strange.

The show uses 360-degree visuals and surround sound to take audiences through 4.5 billion years of natural history.

It begins in space before exploring the origins of life on Earth, extinction events, asteroid strikes and the emergence of humanity. The experience also features images of plants, bioluminescent mushrooms and marine life including humpback whales.

It follows the development of Homo sapiens from early agricultural societies to the modern day, while examining the links between different parts of the natural world.

The production carries a conservation message, describing Earth’s biosphere as fragile and finite. It also focuses on humanity’s ability to work with the planet rather than against it.

The experience ends on a hopeful note, presenting conservation as a way to help prevent extinction and protect nature.

Dominic Strange said Chester Zoo was proud to become the home of Our Story in the north of England.
