The Duchess of Sussex broke contact with her father last year after receiving information about allegations concerning his behaviour, the BBC understands.
Sources close to Meghan said she wrote to Thomas Markle warning that he would never meet her children, Archie and Lilibet. She also made clear that she would not contact him again.
The letter followed information shared with Meghan about allegations involving her father. She said previously that a letter sent to the Metropolitan Police contained “troubling and disturbing allegations” and that she had been assured they were being investigated.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed it received a letter in January 2019 containing “a number of claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom”. The force said the letter was shared with the offices of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Police said the information was not passed to other law enforcement agencies at the time. The force is reviewing how the matter was handled.
Reports have alleged that child sexual abuse images were found at Thomas Markle’s former home in the Philippines. The allegations have been denied by Mr Markle.
Meghan said her decision to keep her father away from her children was made to protect them. The Metropolitan Police review remains under way.
