A Chester student has reached the national final of a competition celebrating student innovation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Eila O’Connor, 20, is one of only 10 teams from across the UK to reach the Champion of Champions enterprise competition. She has developed the project with fellow computer science student Isaac Kennington, also 20.
Their online platform, CVSuite.ai, is designed to help students and graduates improve their chances of passing artificial intelligence screening used in recruitment.
The platform helps applicants match their experience to individual job opportunities, rather than relying on generic AI-generated applications.
It also provides careers teams with live data showing where students are being screened out, helping identify where further support may be needed.
A competition spokesman said the project aimed to address part of the problem by helping students improve their own applications.
The project comes as many young people face difficulties entering education or employment. The competition said nearly one million people aged between 16 and 24 in the UK are not currently in education, employment or training.
O’Connor and Kennington will present their innovation at the Champion of Champions event at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London in November.
The competition is sponsored by the Engineers and Scientists in Business Fellowship, a business education charity.
Ten student teams from universities across the UK will receive expert coaching from members of the ESBF’s Sainsbury Management Fellows community before pitching their ideas in the live final.
The finalists will compete for a share of £16,500 in prize money and business mentoring.
