A charity Christmas card shop will return to Macclesfield Library this festive season for what is expected to be its final year.
The shop will open from 31 October to 5 December, selling Christmas cards, gifts, toys, wrapping paper, festive novelties and decorations.
More than 30 charities are taking part in this year’s shop. All staff are volunteers, while the sale of gifts and other items covers the shop’s overheads, allowing 100% of card sales to go directly to the charities.
The Combined Charities Christmas Card Shops were founded by Sheila Hallas MBE in 1971. Over 55 years, the initiative has raised more than £6 million for local, national and international charities.
Lead volunteer Jill Dodson said the shops had become “much more than places to buy Christmas cards”, describing them as welcoming and festive places where customers could support good causes through their purchases.
She added that the final year would be a chance for customers to buy extra cards and maintain their support for the charities in future Christmases.
Sheila Hallas said she felt “incredibly proud” of what the shops had achieved, thanking volunteers, participating charities, supporters and returning customers.
She said the final year would be marked as a celebration of the initiative’s contribution, adding that she hoped people would join the shops for “one last Christmas of shopping with purpose”.
Alongside Macclesfield, charity Christmas card shops will also be set up in Knutsford, Wilmslow and Sale.
