A group of friends from Crewe and Nantwich is preparing for a 50-mile charity cycle ride on Remembrance Sunday to honour fallen service personnel and raise money for the Royal British Legion.
The cyclists will travel through Cheshire and Shropshire on Sunday 8 November, stopping at 11 churches and war memorials along the route.
At each location, they plan to lay a remembrance cross in tribute to those who lost their lives while serving in the armed forces.
This will be the second year the group has organised the ride, which was inspired by a visit to Normandy in 2024.
During that trip, the friends cycled to the D-Day landing beaches, where Allied forces began the liberation of Nazi-occupied north-west Europe in June 1944.
For group spokesperson Dave Bexon, the visit carried particular personal significance because of his father’s involvement in the landings.
“My dad landed on Sword Beach on the third day of the D-Day landings so it was incredibly moving for me to visit the beaches on our Normandy trip in 2024 and realise the scale of it all,” he said.
The experience prompted the group to organise a Remembrance Sunday ride closer to home, combining visits to local memorials with fundraising for former service personnel and their families.
Last year’s event raised nearly £1,000 for the Royal British Legion.
The cyclists have increased their fundraising target to £2,000 for 2026.
Bexon said the event was intended both to remember those who died in military service and to support veterans facing difficulties today.
“The ride is a way to honour and remember all those young men and women who didn’t make it home but it’s also about fundraising to help our heroes today,” he said.
He acknowledged that the new fundraising target would be challenging but hoped residents would support the group’s efforts.
The Royal British Legion provides support to serving and former members of the armed forces and their families, including assistance with financial difficulties and wellbeing.
The cyclists will complete their commemorative journey on Remembrance Sunday, with donations contributing towards their £2,000 fundraising target.
