Work finishes on key Sizewell C rail junction
A nine-day programme to upgrade Saxmundham rail junction has been completed, Network Rail said.
The junction, in Suffolk, connects the Leiston branch line with the East Suffolk Line and is part of the route planned to support the construction of Sizewell C.
Engineers renewed the manually operated junction and converted it to a powered system. Modern equipment was also installed, alongside wider signalling and infrastructure improvements.
The work was carried out around the clock by Balfour Beatty on behalf of Sizewell C, with Network Rail and Atkins engineers involved at other locations.
Greater Anglia services between Halesworth and Ipswich were able to resume following the completion of the work.
Network Rail said the upgraded junction would improve reliability for passengers and support future freight services carrying construction materials to Sizewell C.
Joe Kennedy, infrastructure director for Network Rail Anglia, said the changes would also help reduce the number of lorries using local roads during construction.
The wider programme is intended to support the transport of construction materials for the new power station by rail and sea. The project says this could account for up to 60% of the materials needed for the build.
