Thursday’s newspapers focus on the Democrats’ sweeping victory in the US midterm elections, with several front pages describing the result as a major setback for President Donald Trump.

The Financial Times calls it a “crushing midterm rebuke to Trump”, alongside figures showing Democrats winning majorities in both the Senate and House of Representatives.

The paper also links the result to concerns over the cost of living, reporting that oil prices fell and technology companies’ shares rose after the vote.

The Daily Telegraph focuses on divisions within the Republican Party. Its front page says Vice-President JD Vance has “turned on Trump” and blamed the Iran war for the party’s “humiliating” defeat.

The i paper takes a similar line, with the headline “Vance blames Trump’s war for crushing defeat”. It describes a “blue wave” sweeping across America while also carrying the White House message that “Trump is still your President”.

The Daily Mail reports that blame was being directed at Mr Trump by JD Vance and Donald Trump Jr. Its coverage also points to anger over the handling of the Iran war.

The Guardian uses the one-word headline “Trumped”. It says Americans woke to a “radically altered political landscape” as a new era began on Capitol Hill.

The paper describes the result as a historic election upset, with voters rebuking the president over the Iran war and handing control of Congress to the Democrats.
