People have shared some of their worst job interview experiences, including one candidate who was asked whether she was “a crier” during an interview for her first job.
Chas Edwards told the BBC he was asked the unusual question during an interview for an assistant position at a publishing house in New York.
He assumed the interviewer was joking and replied that he did not cry. He later discovered that his answer had helped him secure the job.
The interviewer was apparently looking for someone unlike her previous assistant, who she believed had cried too often. Edwards said he worked in the role for 13 months without crying, although he admitted he was “crying inside”.
Another contributor, Tiara Allen, arrived on time for a retail job interview but found that the interviewer was late.
Corinne Card also described an uncomfortable experience after being asked during an administrative job interview whether she enjoyed working with people. The question came as the first part of the interview.
The stories were shared with the BBC after a discussion about an especially uncomfortable interview question. While difficult interviews can be unpleasant at the time, the experiences also offer an insight into the varied expectations candidates may encounter when applying for work.
